UBL 2000 Playoffs: Round 2 - Burlington Bulldogs vs Washington Tourists Game 1: Bulldogs 3, Tourists 2. The Tourists took advantage of Todd Stottlemyre's Pr hold rating, stealing six bases off him directly leading to a 2-0 lead through 7 innings. But once Shane Reynolds left the game after seven scoreless innings, the Bulldogs tied the game in the 8th by capitalizing on a Chipper Jones error, scoring a run on the most exciting play in baseball, the RBI HBP, follwed by a bases loaded walk. In the 9th, after Jason Christensen loaded the bases by intentionally walking Mike Piazza, John Olerud walked forcing in the eventual winning run. Masato Yoshii picked up the win with two scoreless innings, Jason Christensen got the loss, and John Wetteland got the save after pitching a perfect 9th. Bulldogs lead series 1-0. Game 2: Bulldogs 1, Tourists 6. After a first inning 1-0 lead, the Tourists stormed back with 3 runs in both the 5th and 8th innings led by a two-run homers by Damian Miller and Harold Baines (pinch hitting), as well as a solo shot by Nomar Garciaparra. Tourists lead series 2-1. Game 4: Tourists 1, Bulldogs 2. In a pitching duel, Shane Reynolds took a hard luck loss on three days rest after giving up a 1st inning two run homer to John Olerud. Gil Heredia got the win with 4 hits and a run over 6.2 innings. John Wetteland picked up his second save of the series. Series tied 2-2. Game 5: Tourists 5, Bulldogs 6. This seesaw battle was tied through 6 innings at 4-4. John Wetteland pitched a perfect ninth for his third save of the series. Bulldogs lead series 3-2. Game 6: Bulldogs 4, Tourists 9. The Tourists took advantage of losing pitcher Roger Clemens again scoring 8 runs in his 4 innings of work. Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Manny Ramirez, and Chipper Jones twice, all homered against the Rocket. There was some suggestion of a conspiracy since the Rocket will pitch for the Tourists in 2001. David Cone threw a two hitter over 7 innings for the win. Series tied 3-3. Game 7: Bulldogs 6, Tourists 3. Is there anything grander in sport than game 7? The Bulldogs took advantage of losing pitcher Shane Reynolds who was pitching for the second time on three days rest. Reynolds gave up 5 runs in his 3 innings before departing. Winner John Smoltz scattered 8 hits over 6.2 innings and Rheal Cormier, Mark Petkovsek, and John Wetteland (with his 4th save of the series) shut the door the rest of the way. In particular, Petkovsek got Jeff Bagwell to fly to right after the bases were loaded with two out in the eighth on an error by Rich Aurilia. Bulldogs win series 4-3 despite being outscored 32-24.
