UBL History

UBL '91-'92 (Inaugural) Season:
The UBL was conceived in the summer of 1991 as a way for the fledgling ABL (which also started in 1991?) team owners to while away the cold winter months playing their new love, PTP baseball. In the World Series, my Washington Tourists beat Godfroid Vaillant's Gatineau Phoques 4 games to 2. Ron Gant and Cecil Fielder starred for the Tourists - both hit over 40 homers. Gant was the man all year long, as I recall.

UBL '92-'93 Season:
Somewhere in here, David Dow took over the commissioner duties from Mike Matarredona (or was it the other way around?). In the World Series, Pierre Hickey's Slammers (defunct) beat yours truly's Yellowknife Slaves (became the Browns, now the Wahoos) 4 games to 3.

I actually have the disk for this season, download '92-93 Final Disk here

UBL '93-'94 Season:
Dave Dow's Agora Live (defunct) downed the Peter Iezzi's Mashers 4-1 in the NL playoffs and, to quote Dave, "were awaiting the winner of the (Bob Blasko's) Hurricanes - Cavemen series, but Pierre Campeau moved to Australia and the playoff was never completed. Hence the Live were never challenged by an AL team. Geez, my one and only time to the finals and the other team forgot to show up." I guess we'll call this the UBL's strike year!

I don't know if the Cavemen became another team, or whether they split up. I think M.Campeau's other team, the Stars, were taken over by Mike M., then became the Vipers under John Thompson. But, I could be all wrong, too.

UBL '94-'95 Season:
JJ Gauvin started a run of successes when his Hull Olympics scored a World Series victory over the Slaves, 4 games to 3.

Somewhere around this time, Pierre Hickey took over as commish. I think it was for just this one year.

UBL '95-'96 Season:
This time, JJ's other team, the Hull Beaners, beat the Tourists 4 games to 3, after being down 3-0 (I'm dead sure of this one). This after beating the Slaves 4-3 in the playoffs, again after being down 3-0. I had visions of playing myself in the WS, but JJ scuttled those plans. The Tourists had to beat Hickey's 130-win Sluggers (or was that Slammers?) to get there, what an upset!

The UBL was in grave danger of going under before this season. JJ & I agreed that I would take over as commish for a year, then it would be his turn for a year (I wonder why, hahaha, seeing as how we played each other in the WS two years in a row). Really, running a league is the last thing I ever wanted to do, but here I am still..........

UBL '96-'97 Season:
Sweet revenge as the Tourists finally beat the jinx and the Beaners, 4 games to 1.
